The Coastal Home Maintenance Checklist for Hove Homeowners
Living in Brighton & Hove puts you close to one of the finest stretches of coastline in England. But that same salt-laden breeze that makes Brighton & Hove so desirable can be quietly destructive to your home if left unchecked. Here is the seasonal checklist every Brighton & Hove homeowner should follow.

Living in Brighton & Hove puts you close to one of the finest stretches of coastline in England. The sea air is invigorating, the views are second to none, and the lifestyle is hard to beat. But that same salt-laden breeze that makes Hove such a desirable place to live can be quietly destructive to your home if left unchecked.
At Hove Home Maintenance, we carry out dozens of repairs every year that could have been avoided with routine upkeep. This checklist is designed to help Hove homeowners stay ahead of the damage before it becomes costly.
Why Coastal Homes Need More Attention
Salt air accelerates corrosion on metal fittings, strips paint from exterior surfaces faster than inland environments, and encourages damp to take hold in poorly ventilated areas. Properties in Hove and the surrounding Brighton & Hove area face these challenges constantly, and the older Victorian and Edwardian terraces that line many of our streets are particularly vulnerable.
Spring: Inspect and Repair After Winter
Check gutters and downpipes for blockages, cracks, or salt corrosion. Clear any debris left by winter storms.
Examine exterior paintwork for flaking, peeling, or bubbling, signs that moisture has worked its way in. Re-paint where necessary to protect the underlying timber or render.
Inspect window frames and sills. Wooden frames near the coast dry out and crack over winter. Fill any gaps and apply a fresh coat of exterior paint or varnish.
Check garden fencing and gates. Salt air and wet winters are hard on timber. Sand down any rough patches and treat with a preservative.
Summer: Maintenance While the Weather Holds
This is the ideal time for exterior decorating. Tackle any painting, re-rendering, or timber treatment whilst conditions are dry.
Clear and treat garden paths and patios. Moss and algae build up quickly in Brighton’s mild, damp climate and can become a slipping hazard.
Service outdoor taps and hose connections. Check for drips or leaks that could cause damp to work into external walls.
Inspect the loft and roof space for signs of moisture ingress or damaged insulation.
Autumn: Prepare Before the Storms Arrive
Clean gutters again after leaf fall. Blocked gutters in a coastal storm are a leading cause of water damage in Hove properties.
Check external door seals and draught-proofing. Wind off the Channel is relentless from October onwards.
Inspect garden structures (sheds, pergolas, raised beds) and secure anything that could be lifted or damaged in high winds.
Service your boiler before the cold sets in. An unexpected breakdown in January is both uncomfortable and expensive.
Winter: Monitor and React
Watch for damp patches on internal walls, particularly on north-facing elevations and ground floor rooms adjacent to the pavement.
Keep an eye on any flat roof sections, which are prone to pooling in heavy rain.
If temperatures drop below freezing, lag any exposed pipework to prevent burst pipes.
Not Sure Where to Start?
Many of the jobs on this list are straightforward if you are reasonably handy. Others (roof inspections, boiler servicing, re-rendering) are best left to a professional. If you would like a trained eye to work through this checklist with you, or if you have noticed a specific issue at your Hove or Brighton property, we are here to help.
